Dr. Robert Beiko

Dalhousie University

Dr. Rob Beiko is an Associate Professor and Canada Research Chair in Bioinformatics in the Faculty of Computer Science at Dalhousie University. In addition to developing GenGIS, a software allowing interactive analysis and visualization of microbial communities, the Beiko lab uses machine-learning to understand various problems relating to genomics, including promoter classification, genotype-phenotype associations, and protein function prediction.

What to expect

To understand 16S rRNA sequencing data, a plethora of bioinformatic tools are available. However, how do you know which method to use and when?

This workshop will cover the theory of microbiome analysis using 16S rRNA sequencing data. Join us on October 3, where we will discuss the theory behind various marker gene analysis tools, sequence clustering methods, and normalization techniques. Select attendees will provide 15-minute presentations explaining which method they use during a microbiome analysis and why. Attendees will gain a better understanding of popular microbiome analysis tools, what each method does, which is best to use and when to use it.

See our workshop schedule for more details.
